Some common myths

  • Only poor, lazy people are on food stamps.
  • People on food stamps don't work.
  • People on food stamps don't try to become self-sufficient.
  • Most people on food stamps are non-white.
  • People on food stamps "have it made".
  • don't give people food stamps, and they will pull themself by the bootstraps, and become self-sufficient

Answer to those myths...

  • Most people on food stamps are working.
  • Most people on food stamps hold one, two or more jobs.
  • People on food stamps are trying to become self-sufficient by trying to work more than one job and feed their family.
  • Most food stamps recipients are white (Berg 183).
  • People on food stamps certainly don't have it made, and frequently, as noted above, have to work more than one job (see also "Nickel and Dimed: on (Not) Getting By in America" by Barbara Ehrenreich).
  • If the food stamps program is discontinued and/or eliminated, the ever growing smaller safety net of many Americans will disappear, and we will have hunger in unspeakable dimensions again, like in the great American depression.
